Five Things Every English Major is Tired of Hearing
Hey! As you can tell, I’ve been gone for a while, trying to figure out what I wanted to blog about. I realized that some of the things I had blogged about before weren’t really me. I didn’t want to be something I’m not. So here I am. I want to make something clear: I’m not a beauty blogger, a fashion blogger, or even a hairstyle blogger.
I’m not insinuating that you can’t be interested in blogging more than one thing. I’m just not (although, I love reading those types of blogs). I’m trying to be honest while figuring out thirty things at once. And once again, as I have mentioned before, blogging is only a hobby. I enjoy it, but it isn’t something I want to do full-time. That being said, let’s move on to the Five Things Every English Major is Tired of Hearing.
1. “Oh, so you’re going to be a teacher?”
This is literally THE FIRST thing everyone says after you tell them your major. I have not come across someone who has not said this. It’s exhausting and annoying to hear. There are things I could do BESIDES TEACHING. I’m not against teaching. In fact, I’d love to teach in the future, but that’s not my top goal.
2. “What else can you do with an English degree?”
English is a pretty broad degree, therefore there are numerous things to do with it. I suppose teaching is one of the more popular jobs out there.
3. “That must be easy.”
Okay, getting an English degree may not be as difficult as going to Medical School, but who said it was easy? You have to learn quite a few theories, then analyze texts according to the rules of these theories. So, basically, lots of reading, and not even the good kind (at least not for me).
4. “I hate English.”
Then I fake laugh and pretend to care as I say, “Really? Why?”
No offense, but I don’t really want to know if you hate it. I just don’t know what to say to this statement. It doesn’t exactly further progress the conversation.
5. “Why don’t you do a double major?”
Because I don’t want to; have you ever thought about that? People have asked me this before and it’s very frustrating for me to answer without being rude. What kind of question is it, anyway?
That’s all for today! I hope you enjoy the rest of your week! I’m going to go revise a chapter now!
